Thanksgiving, or Thanksgiving Day is an annual one-day holiday to give thanks (traditionally to God) at the close of the harvest season. In the United States, Thanksgiving is celebrated on the fourth Thursday of November.
The first known thanksgiving feast or festival in North America was celebrated by Francisco Vásquez de Coronado and the people he called "Tejas" (members of the Hasinai group of Caddo-speaking Native Americans) on 23 May 1541 in Palo Duro Canyon, Texas, to celebrate his expedition's discovery of food supplies.[3] In the sense of a feast in gratitude to God celebrated by Europeans in North America, this has a claim to be the true first North American Thanksgiving.
In the middle of the American Civil War, President Abraham Lincoln, prompted by a series of editorials written by Sarah Josepha Hale, proclaimed a national Thanksgiving Day, to be celebrated on the final Thursday in November 1863:

It is just a one day event, but
It is such an important one that weeks of planning and talking and preparing food makes it appear to be almost a month long.
Always on a Thursday and so frought with travel complications, that businesses just closed down. Now so many people shop the day after that only the upper middle classes and school students can take the day off, everyone who owns a business or works for a service or shop have to work that biggest sales day of the year, the day after Thanksgiving.
So, at our house, the preparing starts with travel plans and phone calls, then the menu discussions and the Day truly begins when the turkey goes into the oven. It is a three day celbration of family and food and football and leftovers at our house. Then we all go back to work and brag about how much fun we had Not shopping and Not driving around to eat and Not arguing that other people are jealous.
