0.5 x 0.5
when you are dealing with numbers that are less than 1, multiplying them with another number is actually 'TAKING A FRACTION' of the other number.
half of an apple is less apple for breakfast
half of the above is starvation.
So naturally 0.5 x 0.5 is smaller than 0.5

I give a shot at trying to explain why the product of .5 *0.5 is lower
Think of 0.5 as a fraction (1/2). when you multiply two fractions together you multiply the two top numbers together and the two bottom numbers together. (1/2)*(1/2)=(1*1)/(2*2)=1/4= 0.25
If you multiply 0.75 by .05. 0.75=(3/4) 0.5=(1/2)
so (3/4)*(1/2)=(3*1)/(4*2)=3/8
Another way to think of it is in terms of percentage. Let say you did well on your last test; you got 85%. On that test you had fifty questions. and you want to find out how many questions you got right. You could count up all the correct answers, but I would not because I'm lazy. I would multiply the number of questions on the test by 85%. 50*0.85=42.5 You got 42.5 questions right.
I hope this helps to give you a better intuitive understanding on what is happening. I think this is a great question.
For me things make more sense in Math when I use fractions.

When you're multipying decimals like this there is a simple rule.
Multiply as if they were whole numbers and then move the decimal point to the left by the amount that they were to the right in the original numbers (sounds complicated I know). but:
0.5 x 0.5 = 5 x 5 = 25.
Now in the original numbers there there were two 5's (one each)to the right of the decimal points, so the decimal point in the answer needs to be moved 2 numbers to the left = 0.25,
Example 1.75 x 0.01 = 175 x 1 = 175 (then move decimal 4 numbers to left and a zero needs to be put in front) = 0.0175
Example 1.2 x 1.8 = 12 x 18 = 216 move decimal two to the left = 2.16
Practise a few times it it becomes really straight forward.

The answer is 0.25 because
0.5 is the same as writing 1/2 and when you multiply by 1/2 you are in effect dividing by 2 (as the fraction shows with the 2 on the bottom),
therefore 1/2 divided by 2 equals 1/4 or 0.25

0.5 * 0.5= 0.25
The answer is lower because you are looking for one-half of the quantity "one-half". Another way to look at it is to change the way the problem appears. Multiplying by 0.5 is equal to dividing by 2. So, if you divide 0.5 by 2, you get 1/2 of the original answer, or 0.25.

If we had 0.5 * 1 it would return a 0.5
BUT
You are multiplying 0.5 by LESS than One. Therefore, it has to be lower than itself.
Dont let the decimal throw you..Here is another example..
If we had 4 * 1 we would get 4
But if he had 4 * 0.5 we would get 2
2<4

To begin with, you want to think about what the decimal represents. Picture that 0.5 represents half of an apple.
Then, when multiplying 0.5 (that is to say, I want to find out what is half of the item I am multiplying against) againast half an apple... You have one quarter of an apple, right!?
In other words, 0.5 times 0.5 is 0.25.
Hope that helps.

0.25
It is lower than 0.5 because what you are doing is saying
(1/2)*(1/2) = (1/2)/2 = 0.5/2
so you are dividing 0.5 by 2 thus resulting in a lower number
