The sky is blue because of the different energys of photons of different colour and that determines how long an electron remains in an excited state when it absorbs a photon. The higher the energy of the photon the longer the electron stays in an excited state. Remember though that the electron is spinning around an atom (say a Nitrogen atom in the atmosphere) so if it stays in an excited state for a long time it can spin further round before the photon is re-emitted. A red photon has less energy so the electron doesn't stay excited for long so the electron doesn't spin round very far before the photon is re-emitted.
Its a bit like jumping onto a merry-go-round. If you stay on for a few seconds and then jump off you'll be travelling in a completely different direction to when you jumped on. If you stay on for just a fraction of a second you'll jump off travelling in pretty much the same direction as when you jumped on. Blue photons stay on for a long time and consequently get scattered in all directions so the sky appears blue.
Thankyou, thanyou, thankyou, Black sheep I love you !

What color would you prefer?
The sky is blue because wave lengths of light closer to the red end of the spectrum get filtered out by the upper layer of the atmosphere more than do the ones closer to the purple end of the spectrum. The weighted average of the wavelengths getting through is blue, but with enough getting through at all wavelengths that the overall effect is blue mixed with white, so we get a light blue, rather than a dark or pure blue.

A clear cloudless day-time sky is blue because molecules in the air scatter blue light from the sun more than they scatter red light. When we look towards the sun at sunset, we see red and orange colours because the blue light has been scattered out and away from the line of sight.

Because when God was painting his model of the Earth, he accidently spilled blue paint on it. To make the model and real version match, he turned our sky blue, too.
(Kidding. Its a refraction of light that makes the sky blue.)
(Also no offense to Christians. I was just repeating a joke I heard at work about it.)

The wavelength of colour blue is shortest so it passes through our atmosphere while wavelengths of other colours are relatively high- they get filtered by our atmosphere.

the sunlight is refracted from particles in the air. It's a bit like a prism.
