Until you find out if he is real serious, get some coin folders. They are usually available at Wal-Mart type stores, as well as coin dealers. Don't get the ones for the older cents, for there are some cents, that are very expensive to buy and your chances of finding one in circulation is nil. Get the book from 1959 and up, it is the Lincoln memorial cent collection. The folder has hole to push in the coins with holes for all the coins struck at the different mints. Most of the coins you can find going through rolls of cents. There are a few hard ones and if he gets interested, he can earn the money to buy them, or get as gifts. You can do the same with Jefferson nickels. They start in 1938 and the funny thing here, you may actually find a 1938 in change. Again the folders will do. He will also need a book to learn about coins. A good book that list all U.S. coins with info on where the mint marks are and how to grade, is what is called the Red Book- A Guide to United States Coins. I think the retail for the book is 14.95 but some coin dealers give a break on the price. It comes out every year, but you don't need one every year. There are better ways to keep up with coin prices. Such as Coinage magazine, comes out once a month. There is a lot of info in the book on coins and their history. If he likes history, coins are a great way to learn more. I have coins that the writting on it, was hand done by a Chinese Emperor. I have coines that George Washington may have spent. Coin collecting is called the hobby of kings and it can be a wonderful past time. As he leans and wants to do more get back to me, I will be glad to help as well as other coin collectors, we are always a help to the beginners.

i dont know much about collecting coins, but i would suggest to have him start out collecting the state quarters, my cousins seem to enjoy this, collecting all the 50 states, is one thing, but they also have to get both issues or whatever the one with the P and the D which makes it a lttle more interesting. and waiting for the new ones to come out is fun too, prolly not the kind of advice you were looking for, but it might keep him busy for awhile, untill you can get more information :)

If you want to get really high tech you could always use a metal detector and search, but you did say you didn't want to waste money. I'd suggest going to antique shops or small stores like that because they always have good deals on older things like that. Also Ebay is always a good way to go, just have to set up an acount. Hope this helps

how about making the first coins a Christmas gift?
you can also see on the net some numismatic sights..
and you can ask other people here who live abroad (like me for instance) to send your son the fist coins. I will be happy to send some Hungarian ones. :-)
