If you're travelling from the UK then you have to apply for a visa if you've got a criminal record, even if youre travelling for under 90 days using the visa waiver scheme. It can take upwards of 6wks to get one so don't make definite travel plans until you have.
It's at the US embassys descretion as to whether they award you one. If they don't and you apply for another one which is then approved, you have to declare it at immigration upon entering the US.

It depends on where you are coming from, and what the conviction is for.
If it is a very minor crime, and you can get a passport, and you are in a country that you have to apply for a visa, your chances are still okay ...
If it's what in this country would be a class A misdemeanor or a felony at any level, and you have to apply for a visa to come here, probably not. Consult with an attorney who would know before making plans.
If you are in Canada, and just coming over the border to the US by land, chances are good that you wont get checked thoroughly enough to be denied entry, depending on your demeanor. Of course, the border checks are more thorough and they check out more vehicles and people than they used to, so again, depends on the crime and other factors ... if you get checked out, your entry may be denied. A friend of mine has been closely questioned and once denied entry based on a misdemeanor (drugs) that took place in 1969!, with a clean record ever since and a pardon in canada, so there is no way of telling for sure ...

They hate drug convictions nevertheless, i comprehend that. that's a snigger once you think of that u . s . of america is a u . s . which tortures people in Guantanamo and Abu Graib, has abolished the regulation of habeus Corpus and likewise used the atom bomb on civilians. yet they niggle a pair of criminal checklist.

No sorry you can't..If you wanted too come to the States you would have to get a pardon first and then you would have to have police check, and finger prints taken, also I don't believe the States would let you enter anyways..
