When I try to go into third gear the engine cuts out...I have had a new carb, new spark plug and have done an oil change, but still have the same problem. It appears to be starved of fuel...but I don't think that it is. What can it be?

As it runs at first and you can go through I assume first and second then into third before it cuts out, that does suggest fuel starvation, or perhaps carb balance. With the engine in 1 and 2 the engine revs higher, so fuel must be getting there, but of course in 3rd the revs drop a bit, perhaps delivering a smaller amount of fuel, small enough to make a difference and cause the stop. When it stalls, can you perhaps remove the carb and check out the float chamber to eliminate or confirm fuel prescence. If no fuel, then check fuel lines, have you got a good breather airway out of the fuel cap if blocked vacuum occurs. Maybe stupid but, is the choke in the right position, if you have one, usually run is down and start is up, have a look at the choke flap in the carb mouth and ensure ok the sympton fits a choke being left on, the engine warms and the dynamics of combustion change and then the mixture becomes too rich, and it will stop. When warm or hot the choke needs to be open. Finally is your fuel "fresh fuel" If it stands for some time say a couple of months, modern fuels break down, this catches a lot of people out, and usually starting is a problem, as they have fuel they overlook this area. Where was your fuel from? New at the pumps or out of a can that was in the garage? It makes a big difference, however as yours starts it is indicative that the fuel is probably ok although running in 3rd gear as I said changes the dynamics of combustion so it might be enough to run badly, or not at all, Probably best to change it anyway just to be sure. The new fuels these days go off, when they deteriorate the flash point is affected, basically it is not as inflammable as it should be, it will still burn, but not good enough for an engine requirement. So there, a few points to check out for you

what brand? it is probebly the points like the first guy said but i have had the same problem before and replaced the jets with a bigger one and the problem stopped. Also my friend bought a yamaha raptor 660 and put a high compression piston and big gun exhuast and it cut out and backfired so he put a bigger main jet in the carb to give it more fuel and it stopped. It could also be the valves need adjusted.

Make sure the float level is correct in the carburater, and that the vacuum operated fuel petcock is working correctly. check that the fuel cap is venting properly, (ride it with the gas cap loose and see if that cures it) also be sure the float chamber vent in the carburator isent restricted

There is no such thing as cheap transport, you would have been better off with a pushbike

you need to get it checked out as there may be some muck in your engine or your plugs/points may want cleaning/changing

50cc isn't a bike engine. It's a chain saw engine.
