My teachers always read the sparknotes and cliffsnotes and then structured the tests and papers so that it covered none of the material in the notes. Sneaky, but effective. I actually really liked reading most of the stuff in school. If you read ahead and read it as a novel you picked up by choice instead of reading to a test or a deadline, you'll remember it far better.
