OK, let me answer because I used to be a professional SAT prep coach.
Skipped answers do indeed count. You cannot show up, answer 3 questions correctly, leave the rest blank and get a perfect score. If you skip the question, you get no points for that question, so your score will not be as high.
HOWEVER, if you answer a question incorrectly, you lose 1/4 of a point. So if you don't know an answer and you can't narrow it down to two choices, you should not guess randomly. If you guess and get it wrong, you lose points, so your score will be even lower than if you left it blank.
The best strategy is to use the process of elimination. Any time you can cross out two answer choices, you should guess from the remaining choices. If you can't eliminate 2 answer choices, leave it blank. Statistically, this will give you a higher score than if you randomly guess or leave them all blank.

You are right, they don't count.
You get 0 points for an answered question and minize 1/2 points if you miss one. So it's better to not answer one you don't know.
On the ACTs, it counts against you if you don't answer a question. On the SATs, it benefits you. Only guess if you can eliminate the answers down to two answers. Remember, it starts with easy questions, then medium, and then hard. Easy questions have easy answers, so if you guess you most likely will be right. Hard questions have hard answers... don't guess on those. It's better to leave the last questions blank, since they are harder.

They are wrong. They dont just skip over it. Look at your score if you answer every other question. You might get them all right, but you still fail with a 50.
Thats what we were told. Thats why they tell you to make an educated guess.
If it didnt count, everyone would just answer the ones they know, and pass that way.
