My ab/fab Italian city is Venice - there is always a festival and in February, Carnival - the best festival of them all - there are two of them!
In the old carnival section, the Venetians endeavored to recreate the atmosphere of the carnival as it was lived under the Serenissima Republic, including some hitherto unpublished details. We saw how this wonderful event was lived and how they spent their days, how they dressed, how they ate and how they enjoyed themselves.
Immagine nuovo carnevale - is the new carnival section. From its Square to its palaces, from the historical places celebrating Venetian greatness to the inaccessible places that guard the memory of a civilization made of culture and glamour: a journey to relive the spirit and times of great Carnivals of the past.
Venice today is an old metropolis that lives again on a smaller scale through the use of a dialect preserving the taste and expressiveness of its ancient language and through the renewal of its community’s traditions, even if they are often tailored to a turistic dimension. Venice is a university city, where the never ending conflict between generations still renew itself. Throughout Carnival time performances by musicians, jugglers, storytellers, fire-eaters (organized by Circuito Venezia da Vivere) will take place in the following places: Campo San Barnaba, Campo Santa Margherita, Campo San Luca, Campo del Ghetto, Campo San Giovanni e Paolo, Corte dei pali, Strada Nuova .
The Ca’ D’Oro building...A most delightful collection of art in a city well noted for its art. It is one of the most famous buildings in Venice, and is, along with the Ducal Palace, the greatest expression of the full flower of Venetian Gothic. The facade was erected by Giovanni and Bartolomeo Bon, father and son, at the order of the Contarini family between 1424 and 1430, but at the beginning the work was directed by Matteo Raventi and successively completed by the Bons. The Ca’ D’Oro was made into a museum in 1927: the collection, apart from furnishings, hangings, and coins, also includes some reliefs by Titian, Carpaccio, Mantegna, Giorgione, Cima and others.

I have been to Italy several times. There are so many places to go and visit I really could not even begin to mention them. I will say that eating in the smaller establishments became my preference - especially in the smaller towns. Of the places most people don't mention, I'd be sure to go and check out Mount Vesuvius, and also - if you're into art and art history - checking into some of the many old houses/buildings built during the reigns of different families in different areas. Some of them are quite spectacular. Hope you get to go!
