I don't always use "snopes".

In the UK we have the "Fortean Times" which deals with all things strange.

Both "snopes" and "Fortean Times" tend to report things without comment. If both contain similar information (which they tend to do), then I think this acts as a second check.

Also both of the above will list their sources (which is something correspondents to this site are very poor at doing) and this allows you to trace the information back to a primary source.

Wait a minute, isn't that an oxy moron?
If a story is an urban "myth", then NOBODY knows that it is accurate. It isn't a true story, it's a myth.
My old Collins dictionary tells me that a myth is a traditional story of unknown authorship, serving usually to explain some phenomenon, custom, etc. It also says that a myth is a fictitious story or an imaginary person or thing.

The show called "Mythbusters" on the Discovery Channel. It is very entertaining! Two scientists come up with crazy experiments to test whether or not a mythis true. Its on tonight sometime.

the thing about snopes is that they reserch ther myths or legends and they tell you if its flase true, some of its true or if they have no idea...look at some of their explanations, they are very detailed and well orgnaized. Of course some of it may be innacuarate but i dont think its purposefull.
