Hello Meg. I got a job when I was 15 and have had many friends who have worked at a younger age, so perhaps I can provide a few ideas. Connections are always one good way to find work (through family or friends). Also, places that always seem to be hiring teenagers are grocery stores, the food industry (fast food places) and retail stores (such as places in the mall). Another place you could try include day camps. Also, you could run your own business, such as for lawn care, snow removal or tutoring. These could be good, as you can work your school schedule around them. Good luck finding a job!

You can apply anywhere however get a work permit from your school's guidance counselor's office in case you are asked for it. While in the office ask if they have any job postings that you can look at. There are times that local employers will call the school looking for teens to work. Imagine being in the right place at the right time??? That's how I made it through high school working in retail stores... the money was okay but I got school credits and a great start on a resume after graduation.

That depends on your state laws. In some states you can work after age 14, but usually there are restrictions as to how many hours you can work, etc. Overall, those laws are there to protect you as a minor, so you will be able to get an education and not be abused in the workplace.

You can check with your state employment office. They may have a counsellor who works with young people seeking jobs, and/or have a summer job opportunity program for teens. Ours does.

Usually, young people work in fast-food places as a first job. It's crappy, but if you do well, you can put it on your resume and work into a better job later. My first job was after school and weekends in a small town pharmacy. You might check with small businesses.

Good Luck!
Sue

typically you cant get a job until you're 16 at most places, and it helps if you have reliable transportation. try putting an ad in the paper for babysitting or helping elderly people around the house. that's what i did until i got my license. or, you can wait until you're 15 1/2, and ask a local business if they would consider hiring you. if you need to, wait until you get your license.

that's all the advice i can think of to give you. good luck!
