ok, i dont mind wearing their sweaters or jackets but we have to pay for them and they're like 60 bucks. it comes out of our check. they said that we cant wear any jacket or sweater unless it has their logo on it and is bought from them. they also told us that we cant wear turtlenecks, thermals, or long sleeve shirts under our shirts. so it's sort of like we're obligated to buy them or we freeze our asses off if it's cold.

I don't think I like your work! Why on Earth can't you wear a shirt under their garb? If you have a desk job, bring in a small heater and make a copy of the logo and stick it on there with tape. Then crank up the heat till you are warm and can do your job without thinking about how cold you are.

As a store manager for a large company the short answer is yes. Most places have a dress code that they adhere to and more often then not when it comes to things like you are asking about the reason they have a policy in place that you have to pay for is that they have lost a lot of money in providing them for their employees and are ensuring to some degree if you are paying for it out of pocket that you will look after it. Is it morally right? NO! Perhaps it would be worth your while to see if there are any employees where you work that have previously bought the items from the company and have lost a lot of weight or have more then they need and are willing to part with them or set up some sort of sharing network even past employees who have them might be very willing to part with the sweaters or jackets if the logos are current

Many companies require their employees to pay all or some of the cost of their uniforms. Even police officers must pay for certain special equipment they use, such as belts, and vests out of their own pocket.

Petition your company to provide a flat rate uniform allowance for each employee to offset at least some of the cost. Ask if they have a program for employees of need who might have trouble paying for the uniform on their own.

Keep your receipt. The amount you pay is a tax deduction for you if you itemize so it's possible you could get a portion of the cost you paid back after you file your tax return.

Looking for a used jacket or sweater is a good idea, as long as it's in good condition, and the colors and logo still match what's being used.

I'm not sure how it automatically comes out of your check, unless you approved or agreed to it being paid in that way when you were hired or when you ordered your size. It's not fair that the company requires every employee to automatically purchase a new uniform every season, or every year unless the style of uniform changes.

Check with your state labor board. They will know if they can legally require you to wear something that they are not paying for.

Laws on things like that can vary by state.

Good Luck!

In Cali, if they are that specific about what you HAVE to wear, then they have to provide it. It's the law.

I'm not entirely certain, but that does sound wrong. Where is it that you work?
