What it means is that they are going to stop broadcasting analogue tele, this will in no way affect you, it just means your getting a little obsete in the tech department.
You dont need a digital television, as i said, its just changing the analogue to a digital signal, which will make better reception and clearer images for all.

Digital TV is supposed to provide better quality pictures and sound, and also allow for more channels.
In September 2005 the Government confirmed that digital switchover will take place between 2008 and 2012, ITV region by ITV region, starting in the Border region, and continuing in 2009 with Westcountry, Wales (formerly HTV) and Granada, in 2010 West (formerly HTV West), Grampian and Scottish, in 2011 Central, Yorkshire and Anglia, and in 2012 Meridian, London (formerly Carlton/LWT), Tyne Tees and Ulster.
So by the time it gets to your region you will need to have bought (or rented) a digital TV set.

The advert actually gives you a website to visit which would have answered this question for you. It also gives you other information like when the switchover will take place and what your options are. It's basically the definitive guide to the switchover and the advert is like a public service broadcast- that's why it's shown on commercial TV as well as the BBC (who don't show adverts).

Currently the UK TV signal is being broadcast both in analogue & digital - old TVs are analogue but eventually the analogue signal will be turned off.
In order to receive digital you will need to get a Freeview box (the cheapest option - from about £30) or a new TV with an integrated Freeview tuner.
To receive the Freeview digital channels you may need to upgrade your aerial.
See the links: http://www.freeview.co.uk/ http://www.digitaltelevision.gov.uk/index.html
If you can’t get Freeview reception in your area - you will need to convert to cable TV or Sky (Sky Freesat is the cheapest satellite option) http://www.freesatfromsky.com/
PS It's worth buying a Freeview box if you can - because you get so many more channels without a subscription cost. Check the Freeview site to see if you can get Freeview reception in your area.
EDIT: From your previous question, it looks like you've got Sky...so all the above will be irrelevant to you!

The united states won't "change" to all digital broadcasting. that would propose everybody might ought to pay a value to observe television, which could be worse than having to pay to get cyber web service. while you're suggesting there will be not extra outside networks you're lifeless incorrect. The type of obtainable digital channels isn't finite, as you will possibly be waiting to tell, using fact distinctive channels could be created. My wager is it is going to stay because it incredibly is sturdy now: distinctive digital television subscriptions will furnish distinctive channels, and the extra you like the extra it is going to value. *ought to you please placed up the link the place you study all outside stations would be switching to digital?

Where have you been for the last two years ? In the near future, terestrial tv is being switched off, if you want to watch telly, you either have to get a freeview box, cable tv or sky tv, otherwaise basically you will be left with a tv, but no picture.....still, I suppose you could make it into a display cabinet.

It means most TVs will need a digital terrestrial box, sky box or cable box to pick up tv channels. Also it means your video/DVD recorder will not be able to record tv programmes in the normal way, you have to have one of the above boxes conected to your video/DVD recorder via scart lead in order to record tv programmes. some TVs/DVD recorders have digital terrestrial built in which means they do not need an external digital box.
