I would have to say Tom Hanks. Partly because of the Awards, but, mostly because of his diversity in roles and film types. The term this era leaves a lot to interpretation. I'll assume you me the last twenty years or so. In truth though, I can think of at least two dozen quality performers that could be placed in this category on any given day. Opinion and perception are huge variables.

I would say probably Denzel Washington. He always seems to be in something pretty good and he always seems to be, at the absolute least, good in it. I have to say, though, I'd like to see him do something where he's not the center figure of the film; it would be great to see him in an ensemble cast with other real talents as well. Seems like he goes just a tad more for his own ego than for the actual art and presentation of the film he's working on. That one little thing, I think, is what separates him from excellence and true greatness. Tom Hanks sucks.

I agree with the Tom Hanks fans....Who else could play diverse roles like....mentally handicapped in "Forrest Gump", a 12 year old boy in "Big", a gay lawyer in "Philadelphia" as well as in a war picture "Saving Private Ryan". He was excellent in all these roles, demonstrating exceptional and unparallelled talent.

it's close between tom hanks and george clooney. tom has all the awards and is diverse in the rolls he chooses. george is picking some pretty dramatic, even risky roles. he's also directing now. however, tom hanks did help produce, direct, and his son also acted in the mini-series BAND OF BROTHERS...i love that set. i like the way they both keep their lives away from all the glitz. it's a hard pick for me between the two.
