Began--1939 is the date England declared war on Germany, but it would probably be fairer to say it started in March 1938, when Hitler coerced Austria into submitting to annexation, thus beginning his land conquests. Or maybe as early as 1935, when Mussolini invaded Ethiopia, or 1937, when Japan attacked China, starting the Sino-Japanese War which continued until 1945.
Ended--In Europe, May 7, 1945; In the Pacific, August 15, 1945.

Some historians argue that WWII happened due to unresolved issues from the first World War. Germany felt they got a raw deal from the way it was resolved. So when Hitler came along and offered them up someone to blame for their problems (the Jews), they bit. After Hitler took power, he kept gobbling up little bits of Europe and chipping away at civil liberties in Germany. The allies tried to appease him. It didn't work. As they realized appeasement was failing as a policy, Britain and France formed an alliance. Germany threatened Poland, and Britain and France promised support. In September of 1939, Germany invaded Poland. Britain and France declared war, and Germany declared war on the Allies. Germany began invading countries to the west: Belgium, Holland, France, and began bombing Britain. The war in Europe ended with Allied victory on May 8 , 1945. The war with Japan ended in August of 1945. The U.S. of course, entered the war on December 7, 1941, when Japan attacked Pearl Harbor and the Philippines.

I would say it started when Hitler gained power and it ended when everything dealing with it was resolved. i.e; Trials at Nuremberg, etc...
