It's an Irish folk song, a great pub sing-a-long about a man who robs Captain Farrell on the road. He brings the money home and shows it to his love, Jenny. Then while he's sleeping, his love takes his money and tells Captain Farrell where to find him.

The singer likes to drink and romance pretty women - there's nothing significant about the phrase "whiskey in the jar" except the fact that it's in the chorus.

Metallica Irish Drinking Song

it is a cover of an irish drinking song

"Whiskey in the Jar" is the tale of a highwayman who, after robbing a military or government official, is betrayed by a woman named Jenny or Molly; whether she is his wife or sweetheart is not made clear. Various versions of the song take place in Kerry, Kilmagenny, Cork, Gilgarra Mountain, Sligo Town, and other locales throughout Ireland. The narrator of the song is not usually named. The only consistently named figures are the sweetheart who betrays the narrator, "Jenny"/"Molly", and the Anglo-Irish official, "Captain Farrell"/"Colonel Pepper", neither of which aid in the dating of the song. In some versions, the narrator remains imprisoned for his crime, in other versions, the narrator escapes from prison and flees the town of his imprisonment to pursue his love of 'the good life.'

BTW it is a great song whether the Metallica version or the drinking song version

The song Whiskey in the jar is an old Irish ballad which was first rocked up by Dublin born group Thin Lizzy. "Whiskey in the jar" refers to homemade irish potato wine called poitín (puch-een) which is illegal and like 70 something% alcohol.

Im thinking that he was getting drunk off Whisky sleeping with this woman Molly...either her husband or father walked in...he shot the man (whoever he is) and now he is in jail.

A Thin Lizzy cover, I guess...
It's about a guy who robs an army officer, to prove himself to his girlfriend.
Later, when he's imprisoned, he realises that the girl has betrayed him, & starts telling his story...
A great cover by Metallica!
