I am having problems with people at school using the word "retard". I normally don't find words that offensive because I am not that kind of person. I am 14 and in middle school and every couple days or so in 1st period study hall this down syndrome kid walks but our classroom and makes a lot of noise. Sometimes I see people giggling and laughing quietly while I'm doing my best to ignore it. I have a brother who has cerebral palsy and in a wheelchair. This is one touchy subject that I hate to feel sensitive about but I just am. What can I do to make myself not feel so bad?

I don't know that you will feel better about these kids behaving that way, and its okay to be sensitive to it. Alot of people laugh at what they don't understand and that is wrong. I think the best thing you can do is be an example. If you see the person with Down's walking down the hallway, walk with him and say hi. Offer to sit with him at lunch, things like that. This will show the other kids that not everyone feels the way they do and there is nothing wrong with being nice to someone with a disability. You are very mature to feel the way you do, and you should be proud that you do not act the way they do.

I'm very sorry to hear that your brother has cerebral palsy. Perhaps it's a good thing that you empathize with that Down syndrome kid. Is he so noisy that he is disruptive to the rest of the class? Perhaps the school administrators can find a way to make the poor kid be more quiet. If he was more quiet, then he would not be noticed, no one would make fun of him, and there would be no issue.

Accept the fact that most people are insensitive, and thrive on thinking they are better then other's.
Also you can thrive on the fact that,Researcher have discovered that just cuase a person has no control of their body, doesnt mean that they dont have an exceptional capacity for thought.
Steven hawking is a perfect example of this.Just think inside one of those poor wretched bodies may be the mind capable of curing cancer, or aids..
Always do what you know is right and treat everybody as an individual.

im not sure if there is anything u can do, because if you feel bad u will feel bad, and i dont blame you, im in jr high too and people can be mean. If your not afraid maybe you should stick up for him, or just yell at one person if that one person actully says something or simply snap back with a not funny! but whatever you do, please be careful with what you say and who you say it to, you dont want people ending up making fun of you right?
