Are college science labs difficult or just time-consuming?

Do biology, chemistry, and physics labs at the college level receive a bad reputation because they are generally difficult or just because they're time consuming?

they're just time-consuming. it's the lectures that are difficult, not the labs. the labs don't really teach you a whole lot, they just kind of enforce what you were taught in lecture.

I should point out that, as a TA for a gen chem course, the professors in chemical education are looking for ways to make the lab more applicable to the lecture.

In my lab, I teach the science writing heuristic, meaning that students are asked to make connections between lecture and lab, when they're doing the lab.

Honesty I think college labs are fun. Its the lab reports that take a lot of time.

The Jr and Sr level labs are really the best. These are the labs were really get to play with the fun toys.

Some are both. Keep your brain operating while you do your chemistry labwork -- the notes you receive for performing a procedure might not be accurate -- the prof might be seeing who's on his toes. An example from my organichemlab -- the notes said "this reaction will complete in about three hours." It actually took about 15 minutes -- and if I'd let it sit longer, a second reaction would have gone to completion and comletely destroyed the reaction product I was looking for.

Both, I have a Bio lab thats four hours long and its very difficult, I study at leat 15 hours a week for that class alone
