In order to feed video from your laptop to an external monitor, you need the correct hardware, such as S-video out or Composite vid out etc. The simplest solution is to get an external monitor that will allow you to use the standard 15 pin monitor cable to connect the devices.

your laptop has to have some kind of video out. it might have an s-video output that you could hook directly up to your tv. if it does, hook it up to your tv. and press the function key (fn) on your laptop + one of the function keys. it will probably have a small pic of something that looks like a tv monitor or two screens or something like that.
