I really get really bad menstraul cramps during the time my period comes each month, I take Ibuprofen and it helps somewhat, but I shouldn't take it because I have GI problems and Ibuprofen can worsen it. I haven't found anything to help over the counter, even my OBGYN hasn't helped me. They just give me birth control pills that don't work for me but get me nauseated.
Maybe there is another drug I don't know about or some type of food that works, does anyone out there know of anythinhg?

Try heat. I had endometriosis so bad I eventually had to have a hysterectomy. My doctor gave me ibuprofen 800 mg (the prescription strength) and a med. for stomach (Prevacid), but what worked best for me was heat, esp. moist heat. I used to put rice in a tube sock 2/3rds full, tie a knot in it, and toss it in the microwave for 2 or 3 min., and used it. They also make those heat wraps that you can buy at the store that also work well if you are somewhere you can't carry around heat or keep a heating pad plugged in. Hot liquids also help - try drinking herbal teas. Also - make sure you don't get constipated -that'll only make things worse. If your OBGYN hasn't helped you, then you should really pin him down and make sure he understands how bad these cramps are. There are new drugs out there that are not pain killers, and can help you. If he dismisses your symptoms, I'd look for a different doctor. Ask some of the women in your area who they use, and get some recommendations. Good luck!

i get painful cramps too, they have me laying in the bed crying. I found that acetamenophin (tylenol) works the best. I generally will take 4 at a time. Ibuprofen can make you bleed worse like asprin. Also avoid caffine. Caffine is the enemy for cramps, it makes them 10 x worse. Someone told me to try heating pads but they don't work for me, but they might help you.

Excedrin always helped me more than any of the Ibuprofen-based painkillers. Excedrin is a better general painkiller and it works faster. Also, make sure to drink lots and lots of water. Many women get cramps because they get dehydrated during their periods. Also, drinking water helps flush away the bloating faster.

Mmm... boy do I know what you mean. Sometimes I can't even get to sleep, cramps hurt so bad. What I know helps a little (or a lot) is heat. A nice warm shower feels good, or you could use a hot water pocket thing. Hope you feel better.

A hot bath will work, or a heating pad. Also, if youll take a tylenol with an Ibuprofen, itll help alot. Plus, I used to put sports cream on my lower stomach, it helped too.

Yah...I had the same problem with the pill as you...my cramps get so bad I literally throw up from the pain, I also get fevers so the hot water bottle and hot bath thing is out too.

I find the following to be my best recourse:

Cut out caffiene 2 days before your period and then through it..its better to cut it out all togther...but who are we kidding.

This one sucks...but it REALLY helps. Cut out anything with refined sugar in it...no pop, cookies, chocolate, sugar in your coffee, you even need to watch alot of salad dressings.

Chamomile Tea helps to relax and soothe, as well as Valerian root.

I've heard of making Cat nip tea, but I've never tried it and cannot even vouch if it is safe for humans.

IBProfen seems to be the best for me, though it barely helps. I've gotten a prescription for Amityptoline (spelling?) which helps you sleep and stops muscle spasms, but can only be used when you have given up on trying to be productive.

My doctor also reccomended pre-natal vitamins all the time, which has helped some.

Good luck...women of the world are with you.

Oh and if you are younger...don't belive people when they say it'll get better with age..sorry to burst your bubble but it didn't for me...if anything it got worse....better to find out now than count on it.

What works for me and I have possible fibroids and have had cysts that cause terrible cramps...

No or less caffeine right before until the third day of my period
Lots and lots of water, makes the flow better, less cramping
Herbal microwavable heat pack
Ibuprofen
low impact exercise, walking treadmill on low

Chewing ginger root can help with the cramps and is also good for digestive problems. It is an antispasmodic and relieves nausea as well.

It also helps to keep your feet and legs warm. I'm not sure why, but I read about this and tried it, and it does....

Well you are going to have to just suffer and bear...if you take advil or ibuprofin make sure you eat something before you take it.

As for bc pills..you should ask your dr for the mini pills...triphasil or trilevelin that's what i took and it was so much better with less bleeding and pain. And none of the BC pills worked for me.
