Wow. This is an amazing assignment.

It could be any number of things, so as long as you can back it up with your argument, you are safe.

The twenty-first century was the peak of America's industrial age (the affects now being seen through global warming, sweatshops moved from 1930s USA to present day third world countries), so a photo of industry, complete with fossil fuel plumes and young workers?

The 60s changed the culture of people ALL over (not just the United States). Revolution swept the globe. Maybe a picture demonstrators with a globe backdrop?

Technology? The 20th century changed the way we get/store/use information in a BIG way. From your great grandmother scrubbing clothes on a corrugated metal sheet to your mom using a computerized washing machine with an LCD screen. Apples (real) to Apples (mp3 player or laptop) image?

Pick something that you feel is BIG, and run with it. Make an argument for that.

Unfortunately, wars were a part of the 20th century. Still, I would not choose the atomic bomb, because it is the worst of mankind. A more objective item would represent technology, because the 20th century is an age of technology. The space shuttle for example would be an image, or man's walk on the moon, or even a desktop computer! Technology can be used for good or bad.... depends on the motives of the person.

Good Luck!

Picture the world as a half eaten decaying fruit with maggots crawling out of it and on top of it.

That should just about sum up the 20th century I think. In this one century we used up more of the earths resources than in all the ones before put together, the fruit symbolises the Earth itself, the maggots are the rich which are gorging themselves by eating our future.

Any use?

I think the most powerful image of the 20 th century has to be the atomic bomb, it is a beautiful spectacle to watch as in the flash blast and mushroom ,but sinster in its destruction capabilities and can eventually end all life on earth. This legasy can never be dis invented

Maybe a picture of the world because in the last 100yrs the world has become smaller (metaphorically) with travel etc. and so much has happened that has involved everyone. That or a credit card- think it was invented in the 50's (?) and money has always been important whatever form it takes.

Either the man on the moon, or an atomic bomb detonation.

Probably a picture of people in a concentration camp, sadly.
