I am making a compilation CD and I want to make one full of songs that have very smart meaningful lyrics that tell great stories. They can be any kind of music, as long as the lyrics are smart and move people when heard. Feel free to list as many as you like. Thanks for the help in advance.

Oh great question, I love it. You already have many great answers too. Here's a few that haven't been mentioned yet:

"The Reason" by Hoobastank (Wow, what a song. Now where did thier band name come from?)
"Live Like You Were Dyin'" Tim McGraw
"Unwritten" and "These Words" by Natasha Beddingfield (She writes good lyrics)
Any of Billy Joel's songs (Literally any of them, but don't miss "Just The Way You Are" and "She's Got A Way")
"Sitting, Waiting, Wishing" and "Gone" by Jack Johnson (I like anything by him, he's great.)
"Beautiful Mess" and "Meet In The Middle" by Diamond Rio (all thier song lyrics very good, clever)
"She" by Elvis Costello
"Geek In The Pink" Jason Mraz
"Stillness Of Heart" Lenny Kravitz
"Seasons Of Love" from RENT -check out Donny Osmonds version, it is really good.
"Bring Him Home" or "On My Own" from Les Miserables
Queens song lyrics are really good too.
Anything The Beatles wrote is very meaningful.

Thanks for the fun question. It will be interesting to check back and read other answers.

My all time favorite for just the reasons you elaborated - You can't always get what you want - Rolling Stones. Also their Paint It, Black - the opening chords are killer.

Hey, Baby, Que Paso? - Texas Tornadoes. Very upbeat Tex Mex w/a lyric that goes "you got more out of it than I put into it last night." Well, how can you resist?

Thankful by Johnny Lang. Beautiful and affirming.

G'day JSWolpers,

Thank you for a great question.

You have got a wide variety of answers.

Just a few from me.

A Fairytale of New York by the Pogues: The only Xmas song ever set in a drunk tank.

How Soon is Now by the Smiths.

The most meaningful rap song is Stan by Eminem and Lose Yourself is good as well.

The best song out at the moment is Welcome to the Black Parade by My Chemical Romance.

Regards

Imagine- John Lennon...still poignant and powerful today, maybe more so than when he wrote it!

Imagine there's no heaven
It's easy if you try
No hell below us
Above us only sky
Imagine all the people
Living for today...

Imagine there's no countries
It isn't hard to do
Nothing to kill or die for
And no religion too
Imagine all the people
Living life in peace...

You may say I'm a dreamer
But I'm not the only one
I hope someday you'll join us
And the world will be as one

Imagine no possessions
I wonder if you can
No need for greed or hunger
A brotherhood of man
Imagine all the people
Sharing all the world...

You may say I'm a dreamer
But I'm not the only one
I hope someday you'll join us
And the world will live as one
