it would have been late '70's and was on an educational music programme fo children - it was part of the whole show, and would be stories like Cinderella, or the Snow Queen. It was done with Stop Start animation of little puppets with beautiful costumes and faces. I'd like to see it again.

It's just a stab in the dark, but it sounds like Aesop's Fables. I can't really remember much of that show other than it to contained stop animation and puppets. Aesop's Fables are kind of like fairytales as well I guess...

there's been quite a few don't know about 70's was it not eighties?
if it was 80s then I think it was called the story teller and was around in 1989 the original German name is Der Geschichtenerzähler and you can find more about in on IMDB
