Each minute - 6 degrees = 360/60 and each hours = 360/12=30 degrees
Now when its 8:36,
the hour hand is 36 or 36/60 = 3/5 hr ahead of 8 = 3/5*30=18
The minute hand is 4 minutes behind 8 = 4 *6 = 24
Therefore the angle between the two hands = 18+24=42 degrees.

The minutes hand of a clock sweep through 360 in 60 minutes, so every minute it sweeps through 360/60=6 degrees.
At 8:36, the minutes hand is 36*6=216 degrees from noon, while the hours hand is at 40*6+(30*36/60)=240+18=258 degrees from noon, counting the movement of the hours hand through the 36 minutes past eight.
The angle between the two hands is therefore
258-216=42 degrees
as obtained by the previous poster.

At 8:36 the hour hand is at (8+36/60)*360/12 = 258 deg CW from 12:00. The minute hand is at 36/60*360 = 216 deg CW. The diff is 42 deg.
