Do you relate to people through common interests and goals or do your relate to people through emotional need? Or is there some other way to relate to people? Do you find there are just some people you can't relate to or do you make every effort to relate to someone?

I guess I am an observer and can relate through emotional feelings, not necessarily need. I do not feel the need to relate, merely be polite, friendly and observe. When I do find somebody I relate to it is great fun! But I do not go out of my way or find every effort to do so. Why would I? :)

I think yes and yes. You can also relate to someone merely because you share the same culture or belief system, there are a lot of ways. There are some people I might have a very hard time relating to, for instance someone who's lived on the streets and listens to hip-hop and rap. However, I'm sure there is something we can connect on. We're all brothers and sisters in some way afterall. We're all part of the human race.

There are some people that are just too difficult to relate to. I give everyone I meet a chance, in case we share something in common or we just enjoy talking to each other. I relate to people mostly because they are friendly and receptive. Someone can share my interest but they might not be a nice person.

I worked in retail for twenty one years at night as my second job. I have always found it easy relating to people. I always ask how are they doing, and I always cared what their answer is. If they told me someone they loved was sick I told them I would PRAY for them. People will relate to you if you will just be sincere. The more you talk with someone the more you will find you have in common with them.

You have it down pat. We relate on all those levels. The only other way to react is just that, you react to the way they act to you. If they show an interest and are cordial. You react the same way to them. If they are smart alecs and involved in shady doings you keep on going.

Good luck!

My personal experience is to just be myself and be friendly.
I relate to those who appear to have the same interests as I have.
I have met people who I couldn't relate with as they were just miserable. Hated everything and just about everybody, those people steal my joy and power so I leave them with their sorry self's. Sad but true.

Understanding the other person is more important, provided he/ she understands you too. Ego clashes should be kept aside. When we try & relate to somebody...its comes naturally!
