It amazes me the answers people gets on here about Heating and Air Conditioning systems in there homes. First of all the question is so general, that the person answering has no clue what type of system the person asking has... Most answers i read will usually get the person killed... If you have a Gas furnace,,, yes,, have it inspected yearly,, It is important to maintain proper combustion and also make sure it is safe to operate, If it is an oil furnace, I highly recommend having a yearly checkout... Oil nozzles are very precise and can wear out in one season of running,, Plus you need to change the oil filter and clean out the passage ways of any residue left from the oil burning process. Boilers, should also be inspected prior to each heating season, Electric air handlers,,, not a major concern,, run them till they quit.. Heat pumps,,, have inspected in summer in air conditioning mood... You can check the charge (refrigerant level) in a heat pump in the summer more accurately then in the winter. As far as filters go,, stay away from all the pleated high efficient filters,, they restrict the air flow thru a furnace way too much,,, these filters are tearing up equipment and causing premature failure due to overheating the equipment,, Residential furnace blowers can not create enough static pressure to offset the resistance of the pleated filters,, if you don't believe me,, put one in your furnace and check airflow from one of your registers and then pull it out,, you will see a loss of about 30% of air flow with it in...stay with the cheap fiberglass filters. Having your system checked each year to me is a cheap insurance policy for keeping systems running efficently and safe,, Have a Unit go down on christmas day and you will wish you have listened. Do not try yourself,, have a licensed qulified tech do the job for you.. Hope this helps ,, Good Luck

It really would be in your best interest to do so. Preventive maintenance can and does help to avoid catastrophic failures in equipment such as this. Plus, if you are using an oil fired furnace, it can reduce the possibility of safety hazards.

You just need to know that the flames should all be blue. If some parts are a different color it means there are deposits that need to be brushed or scraped off.
If the entire flame is not blue, you need to ajust the volume of gas coming in.

If you have oil definitely yes.If you have gas,it may not be necessary especially if you have a standing pilot ignition. If you have electronic ignition,I would recommend yearly maintenance because there are somethings to be done to prevent breakdowns.

Typically, no. Thought you might want to change the filter. $2 for a cheap one, $6 for a decent one... from Home Depot.

Easy to change.

No, you can do this yourself. Make sure that you have a clean filter, look over the pilot and the burners and make sure that they are not obstructed by dust or other debris. Also check your vents and make sure that they are also clear of debris.
