As many of the other answers have indicated it is a derogatory term for a white person. The origins I'm not sure of but it was popularised in the 70's UK sitcom "Love Thy Neighbour" which was, in my opinion, a racist programme. I am a black man and abhor racism whether directed against black, Asian or white people. I would suggest you educate your friend in good manner and citizenship.

Honky is not a word that originates from London, I think that it is an insult given from a coloured person to a white person. It is a word that I would never use myself.

When I lived in the West Indies, we were called 'whitey honkies'. We just accepted it as a name without any particular offence attached. Don't get hung up about it.

Although a derogatory term used mainly by blacks to refer to whites, its origins are believed to be in the Wolof word 'xonk', meaning red. The term travelled to the US with the slaves.

It's one of those words that non-whites are allowed to call us, and if we get offended then we "don't have a sense of humour". You know, because racism by whites is a real problem but racism against whites is just a bit of fun.
