Yeah i have a few friends that are the same, i wouldnt say they are weird, but i cant see any point in it either. Personally i find it as boring as. you cant get merry on your or own, just kind of depressed instead.

If they drink constantly and heavily on their own then it is called "alcoholism". Otherwise its just a case of having a quiet beer in front of the TV to relax. Quite harmless and not at all "weird". No more weird than scoffing a box of chocs or something.
My BF will sometimes have a beer when he gets in from work, with his tea. It helps him relax and unwind especially if he's had a stressful shift at work. He doesn't get drunk just has one or two.
I don't drink at all (not a moral thing It just makes me sick) so he obviously has to drink it "alone"(I'm there but don't join him in the drinking).
I've had an alcoholic in the family and beleive me thats a whole different story - these people drink all day EVERY day, very heavily (a bottle of whiskey or more every day in my family member's case), and they are secretive and furtive about it - they hide bottles and become defensive and aggressive to their nearest and dearest - its a nightmare (and in my case it killed my family member). Theres a world of difference between having a beer or two in front of the telly after work and being an alcoholic!

If you happen to be eating alone, a beer or glass of wine goes well with certain foods or snacks . . . but the only other times I drink alcohol is in a social setting -- bar, club, party, etc. In other words, I don't go out to drink; I drink because I'm in a setting where drinking is appropriate and rather expected. To just sit around alone and drink, yep, I agree it's weird. But then, there are a lot of people in the world who are weird in different ways than you and I . . . are weird.

Why is it weird to drink on your own? Why do you have to drink to get drunk? I drink tea and coffee all day - don't like juices or cordial so in the evening like to sit down with an alcoholic drink - i don't get drunk but like the taste. Do you think people who sit in cafe's on their own are wierd as well? Maybe they're just hungry!

If it's the only thing you do and you do it every night then it's a problem. Getting pissed on your own is a problem. Depressed?
Don't fancy going out tonight but do fancy a beer, so I'll have a couple of cans (not get drunk) whilst watching telly and playing with Yahoo answers. Don't personally think it's a problem to have a couple.
Each to their own I suppose.

i have a drink most nights..just 1 or 2..when you go out you invariably get drunk..not so when you drink at home..and what with the price of a drink these days..more and more people will drink alone.

The point isen't getting drunk on your own, they are simply having a night in and since they like drinking, they will drink wherever they are.

Not everyone drinks to get drunk, some people can have just one or two.
Not everyone has the luxury of being able to go out, money is tight or they have family commitments.

People who drink alone usually don't do it to have "fun." Many people who drink alone do it to numb pain or feelings and just generally try to escape a little bit of reality.
