There was a real bear at the London Zoo called' Winnipeg', and a swan the writer and his child saw on holiday named 'Pooh'. Thus Winnie the Pooh

a.a. milne's young son gave the name winnie-the-pooh to a little bear cub being held at a zoo in london or somewhere. winnie is for winnifred, and i forget what the "pooh" is supposed to mean. he was like four, so dont try to make too much sense out of it.

'Winnie' is because the original bear was a real bear that was from Winnipeg, Manitoba in Canada.

I'm not sure where the 'Pooh' came from. I always assumed it was a child's name for a stuffed toy.

The character was named after a toy bear owned by Milne's son, Christopher Robin Milne. Most of the other characters are also named after toys belonging to Christopher Milne, the exceptions being Christopher Robin himself, and Owl and Rabbit, who are presumably based on real-life animals.

Christopher Milne had named his toy after a real bear called Winnipeg, brought to Britain from Canada and whom Milne and his son often saw at London Zoo, and "Pooh", a swan they had met on a holiday
