Well, I am not that certain either friend. Usually, when designing holiday themes and decor there is some type of conscious or unconscious personal statement or remark underlying the theme tone. So, it's up to you. Don't want to make any statement ..."Be Good," "Put Christ Back in Christmas," "Prosperous New Year," just center it around, "Best of Life To All," kind of theme.

well, for starters there is no reason to have to do a new theme every year. part of the charm of christmas can also be doing exactly the SAME thing every year, with exactly the same decorations on the tree, etc. i think that can be even better for children, because it develops a tradition for them, and they can always look forward to and remember the same thing. changing the theme every year is beautiful but makes it kind of impersonal, i think. but it is fun, and if you are stuck for ideas, try browsing a christmas store or crafts store, or a christmas tree show; i've seen "country" themes, "jazz" themes (like red and black), themes based on color, themes with glass, "international" (like everything looks like it's from India); just find one ornament or other decoration that you like and build around it. but most of all have fun and don't stress it--that's not what christmas is about!

A couple years ago my mom did a musical theme with gold trim. She decorated the tree in gold and white ribbon, gold ornaments, music note ornaments, and instruments. It was beautiful!
She also did a Disney theme. All the ornaments were Disney characters. It was very colorful. She used red, blue, purple, yellow, and orange ornaments and ribbon too.
