I remember thinking the same thing the first time I used one. and the second, and the third...
It took me a while to learn to insert them correctly, and get used to the feeling.

I think it's normal for it to feel funny, so don't worry. I would suggest trying something thin, like playtex tampons...I remember using tampons for the first time and trying to use tampax...whoa, that didn't get too far.
Don't be afraid to talk to your mom. Most likely, she had the same akward experiences as you when she had her first period, so please don't be embarrassed. It happens to the best of us.
I'm wondering if you use applicators...applicators, at least for some, making putting tampons in much easier. With regular tampons without applicators, you have to shove the whole thing in yourself, and that can feel weird.
If you are experiening pain, that's normal to a certain degree, beacuse you've never put anything up there before, and you might stretch or tear your hymen (thin layer of skin that covers inside of vagina). Just take a few breaths, and put it in slowly.
But, I would talk to your mom. Don't worry! We girls have all had to go through similiar situations. I think you will feel better once you speak to her, and get some more information on periods and tampons.

If it's in properly, you shouldn't be able to feel much of anything... you may not have inserted it all the way, which is pretty much the only way to mess up putting in a tampon. You have NOT damaged yourself or done anything wrong.
You can try pushing it in a bit further, or take it out and try again... be warned, if you aren't bleeding much today, removing it will be dry and uncomfortable. Or ask your mom... this is a normal part of womanhood and she's probably been through the same thing.

you shouldnt be able to feel it at all..you might want to keep praticing until you get it right, you might mess up a lot of tampons but the experience will help you out..it will take a few times to get it just right..and i have also found out that if its the wrong size and you arent used to it, it will also hurt try a small one to start out with and if you arent bleeding strong enough then that might alos hurt you when you put on in..i could never use a tampon with i was bleeding lightly..
here is a site to show you how to use a tampon right...

When you put a tampon in you shouldn't be able to feel it at all. Don't be embarrassed to ask your mom, thats what she's there for! But, if you don't want to ask her maybe you should consider using pads until you can talk to an adult you trust.

you didnt push the tampon in far enough. if you dont push it in far enough, it doesnt go past the muscles which causes it to feel wierd. take it out and make sure that you put your fingers on the end of the big part of the applicator and dont stop pushing until your fingers touch your vagina.

Did you remember to remove the applicator? I know it sounds funny, but I know someone who left it in the first time she used one!

You shouldn't feel embarressed to ask your mom about it unless she makes it creepy.
She'd probably to thrilled to know that she can teach you something that matters.
But yeah, it felt really weird the first time I put one in too...

of course it will feel funny, it's your first time. If it hurts then it's in wrong. I'd use pads, as our system is to be cleaned out, not stuck up inside us...that's my opinion thou..L.

Funny isn't it.
You should talk to your Mother about it though.
