Why don`t you try one of the building societies, some of them have `current a/cs ` where you can have a cheque book but can only write out cheques to the value of the a/c, I am not sure exactly how it works, they may counter-sign the cheques. Sorry I am not very helpful. Ring them up and get details.

There is no point in having a cheque book without a guarantee card to go with it unless you will only be writing cheques to friends and family. Most stores require the guarantee card before they accept a cheque to cover themselves that the cheque will be paid. Why do you want a cheque book, what's wrong with a cash card? I would also concentrate in sorting out your credit rating, try calling Citizens advice who can help you do this.

hbos ( bank of scotland halifax) do a budget account that has cheque facility, but it does come with a cheque garuantee card. If you explain to them that you do not require a cheque card, they will withdraw that facility, but it does mean that you you will only be able to use the cheques in non person transactions, ie paying by cheque by post

you should try Barclays Bank as my wife works for them, They are fairly flexible with what they give to their customers and once you have been with them for a while they will gradually increase the things that they offer you
