Well, some random guy in Germany I believe came up with the idea to stick a steam-powered motor onto a carriage, rig up a steering rack, rig a driveshaft, and off he went! ....into a brick wall because he forgot to add brakes :)

For the first motor-carriage, probably a couple months if he didn't have to build the motor...
