This months Black Enterprise features 75 most powerful blacks on Wall Street, last month Ebony featured 75 outstanding businessmen. The Census Bureau says there are 1.2 Millionaire businesses with 89 billion dollars in revenues and there are many millionaires and dozens of billionaires (Oprah isn't the only one). I don't know why this ignorance about welfare persist. There are more whites on welfare simply because there are more whites in society, but there are more blacks for our numbers (13 percent of the population). We are successful in medicine, law, politics, academia (professors and some Rhodes Scholars. Many Yale, Harvard, Princeton and University of Pennsylvania graduates not to speak of Howard University. Sadly, these people and their children don't always have equal rights to housing and education like their white counterparts. Even Oprah was snubbed at an exclusive shopping store.

The impression that black people do not achieve anything outside sports and entertainment is very much the fault of the media and the images on TV. BET is helping to add to this false impression. Here in the DC Metro area, there are many black doctors, lawyers, professors, and other professionals with advanced degrees. This is an extremely financially prosperous area and many of the successful and well educated people here are black. DC is not the only are where you will find successful black families. The problem is that the image of successful and well educated black people is not popular in either the media or in politics. It doesn't sell.

There are allot of black doctors, scholars, teachers, actors, scientist, ministers, politicians, and heart surgeons who may be offended at such a question. I think if society would stop placing labels on people more people would be achievers, and not just dreamers. I was raised to believe that because I am black I could not be a news caster, now that I am an adult every news station has at least one African American female heading the news. Stereo types would mean nothing if people would stop believing them. I would like to know why is that people think if you're not on t.v winning millions of dollars in a football, or basketball game that you have not achieved? Some of us would be happy just being doctors, scholars, teachers, actors, scientist, ministers, politicians, and heart surgeons. Or some of us may not be concerned at all with achieving things that man tells you are great achievements. God's purpose for your life is the only thing worth achieving in my eyes, but that's just my opinion.

No, and any business large enough to sell stock has black people in their payroll. You make a good point, they've got a whole dumbing-down thing going on. It isn't about race, but what the heck is it really?
