I have a son who is 10 months old and he is infected with chickenpox, it's been 4 days now and his mother is half-way through her second pregnancy. A nurse told us that, if the mother did not have chickenpox as a child, she could get infected and at the same time infect the unborn child. If the unborn child is infected, it's growth could be affected... Is it true??? The nurse we spoke to told us that, the mother will not have to be in contact with your son but, it seems that the mother is not showing any signs of the symptoms. How long does it take before someone is infected from someone who has it? I need feedback, please and thnx.

Its true. The unborn baby will only get it if the mother has never gotten chicken pox before and gets it during pregnancy. She then will pass it on to her unborn baby. The best thing that i would do would be to let the doctor know that she was in contact with the chickenpox virus and even if she wasn't showing any signs they can keep and eye on her anyways as a precaution. Its better to be safe then sorry.

I hope that everything goes well. Good Luck.

yes it is true but if the mother has had it already she would be immune to it or very very unlucky and get it a second time !im not sure what effects it has on an unborn baby but i know there is side effects! you can catch chicken pox from the air in the room you dont have to be in contact so the mother should let her doctor know immediately! hope i helped xx

that sounds pretty freakin' wacky to me! even if the mother got infected, what kind of affect would it have on the fetus? chickenpox is mostly a surface disease, i suppose it could slow the growth if the mother's body were using some of its resources to fight the chickenpox, but wouldn't the same thing happen if the mother just had a common cold? i don't know; i've never heard of that in my life; just hope the mother doesn't get it! i think it only takes a few days for the symptoms to show. when i was little me and both my brothers all took turns getting it, and there wasn't any big delay between each of us getting it. (and my mom never got it and she was the one taking care of us...) for sure it won't hurt anything to keep your son away from the mother for a while (unless you all live together, which it doesn't sound like from your question, but if you did i'd say just go on with your lives)

Unborn baby cannot get it from your son but mom can and then give it to unborn baby.

it takes 21 days from contact to show signs of infection... you should keep your son away from her, and you should really have very limited contact with her until 21 days after your son is no longer contagious

it's not infected, it is affected. A pregnant woman that has chix pox could potentially affect her unborn child. This could result in birth defects or organ defects. She should call her doctor and discuss this with him.

Yes-if the mother did not have chicken pox she can get it and it is bad to have it during pregnancy. It can harm the baby-but I am not sure in what ways. After I was exposed-at age 17-it took about a week for me to get it.

well, if the mother didn't get it as a child, she could get infected. chicken pox is more serious when you get it as an adult, being pregnant makes it even worse. its very dangerous but i'm no doctor so i dont know the details.

I've heard this about German measles, but not about chicken pox. I don't think you have anything to worry about. But if you are concerned, ask a pediatrician, not a nurse.

I think this should be a question for a doctor.
