Far as I have been able to check up via the web, the 1989 model runs a 2.5 liter motor and the water pump is an Airtex (model A84AW7122). Apparently the 1989 only ran this motor and this is the only water pump type it takes. (At least I hope so.)

EDIT: What follows is a pretty generic set of instructions based upon experience. So if you don't have a fan on the pump (which is actually pretty likely), then don't worry. I'm just covering all bases for a car I don't personally know. But modern motors of the US variety have much the same systems (unlike the stuff from Japan which can be a bit strange), so everything else I tell you should work okay. END EDIT.

Assuming you have the new pump and gasket that should come with it, the first thing you need to do is loosen off the bolts that hold the alternator, because the alt is mounted on the water pump casting. Then pop the fan belt off, and continue by taking out the alternator bolts and then set it off to one side. You might want to tie it up so it doesn't get in the way. Oh, and just for safety, disconnect the negative terminal to the battery so you don't accidentally short anything out.

Now if your model is running a fan on the pulley on the end of the pump, you have to remove the fan blade set by unscrewing and withdrawing the four bolts that hold it on. Undo them evenly. Crack them all loose first then unscrew them a bit, then you can wind them out by hand. Take off the blade set and pull the pulley off. If you car has now got an electric cooling fan mounted on the radiator, you'll only have the pulley. It's easier in this case, but you still need to undo those four bolts and take the pulley off. They are all the same size and length so it doesn't matter which one goes back in which hole.

Now you've got more room to work with, disonnect the coolant hose from the water pump. Make sure you don't soak yourself with coolant. If you have a bucket it will help.

Now you get at the bolts that actually hold the pump body on the the end of the engine block. Undo them evenly and as you take them out, put them through holes punched in a piece of carboard with the outline of the pump drawn on it. This is to make sure that the bolts go back in the right places, because they are not all the same length. Use the new pump to trace the shape on the carboard and mark the holes.

When you have all the bolts out, tap the body of the pump around in a few places with a hammer handle or a lump of wood. This will shock it loose. It will probably be stuck on pretty good so don't panic if it takes a few thumps.

Pull out the pump.

Now clean off any bits of gasket that are still stuck to the engine block where the pump was. You have to have it as clean as possible, otherwise the new pump won't have a good seal and you'll get water leaks. Just use a rather blunt kife to scrape it clean then wipe it all dry.

Fit the new gasket on the new water pump. It's designed so it can only fit one possible way. Then carefully place the new pump in position and fit one of the bolts just real loose,by fingers only. Put in the next bolt and the next ditto. Then tighten them up progressively. Do NOT just tighten one all the way first and then another, you will put uneven pressure on the pump body and you may crack it.

When all the bolts are in and tightened up, refit the coolant hose just so it's easy to do up before all the other stuff goes on. Then put the pulley back on, and if you are running the fan set on it, put it in place and fit one bolt loose so it doesn't fall off. Then fit the others, and follow the same routine. Tighten them up progressively. Do NOT go crazy over this and overtighten because if you do, you'll strip the thread on the bolts, okay?

Now refit the alternator and slip the belt back on. Do up all the alternator bolts nearly tight and then tension the belt, so that the longest part of the belt will only depress about half an inch under firm pressure of a thumb. While holding the belt at that tension (by jamming a big spanner down the side of the alternator, for example), tighten the bolts and there you go.

Reconnect the negative lead to your battery.

Now refill the cooling system and start the car. Watch for any leaks around the pump body. There shouldn't be any if it's all tightened up nice and even. But the coolant level will need to be rechecked after you run the motor for a minute or two. So let it run then shut off, check the levels and if needed, add more coolant.

And now....head for the store!!

Bless your heart for being so involved in trying "anything", to get the van going!

Fact is, that a lot of the accessories must be pulled just to get down to the water pump.

Without knowing which engine, transmission, and accessories (Power Steeeering, AC, which Alternator as they have 3 different bracket systems), no mechanic could tell you the things to remove.

I remember that there are 5 engines, 3 alternators, and about 4 other options, that put more or different parts in the way.

Is it a B100, B200, B300, or a Grand Caravan? 4, 6, or 8 Cylinders?

Heavy duty trailer towing package? Serpetine belt(s)? 1, or 2?
V belts?

Which pulleys? Pressed shaft or bolt-on?

Don't you have the Haynes or Chilton manual?

Follow the lower radiator Hose 9 times out of ten you will find the water pump attached to the engine. Water pumps are always driven off one of the belts. Sometimes it's behind the timing cover driven off the timing belt in Japanese cars. Last dodge I worked on the water pump was on the lower passenger side on the front side on the engine accessable after removing the plastic splash guards under the car. You have to loosen and remove the belt and then remove all the bolts until the water pump is free. Make sure you seal it up with a gasket or gasket maker. You don't want it leaking. Permatex works great.

this is too detailed to type on here. You should get a chiltons or mitchell manual for your car and follow the instructions there. These are good manuals and are very helpful.
