I started using tampons yesterday, and I have the plastic applicator. I'm not sure how to insert them, although I know which hole it goes in. But when I DO put it in, it hurts really bad. I'm 13

ok - hmmm. what you need to do is put some saliva - or vasaline on the end of the tampon. then relax. put one foot up on the toilet and insert it into your vagina. do that til the entire top goes in. point it toward the small of your back and push the plunger in. make sure the string is hanging out. if it hurts too much - get smaller - junior tampons - or see a doctor. tampons are one of those funny things that someone really needs to teach you to use and can embarrass you. but don't be. keep trying. if you don't suceed. use a pad and try again next time. it is not the end of the world and you are not the first to have trouble. they were - no doubt - created by men! at any rate if it hurts too bad - please don't torture yourself....do you have a mom who can help you?

Make sure that you choose a plastic applicator and get the smallest absorbancy for your flow.

When you're going to put one in, you have to relax. Get into a position where it will be easiest - most people suggest sitting on the toilet with your legs wide apart, or putting one foot on the edge of the bath. Personally, I find the easiest way is to crouch down with my knees wide apart.

Take the tampon in your right hand (assuming you're right handed). Spread the labia with your left hand and gently insert the tampon into the vagina. Push it in gently until the fingers of your right hand are touching the skin. That's the most important part - it has to be far enough in or it will be uncomfortable. If you're having trouble getting it in, try pushing slightly to one side or the other, or slightly rotating the tampon as you push it in. If you find it a bit dry going in, you could try using a bit of vaseline on the tip of the tampon.

Once the fingers of your right hand are touching the skin, use your left hand to push the applicator in all the way, as far as it goes - again, if you feel a bit of resistance try pushing slightly to one side or the other, then withdraw the applicator and the tampon should be in place.

If the tampon is in the right place, you won't be able to feel it inside you at all. It's difficult to get the hang of at first, but just keep trying, I promise you it's worth it!!! No more messy pads, no more gushing of blood when you sneeze or move position.......tampons are definitely the way to go!!! Good luck!

When I first started, I used tampons but did not bother with the plastic app. I found it easier to take it out of that and insert. If it bothers you while in you have put in wrong a bit. I have not used Tampons for many yrs as I believe that our system is to be cleaned out..NOT to be blocked up inside us...L

There should be a little illustrated instruction sheet in the tampon box that shows you how to correctly insert them. Some previous answerers have also given links. For my part, I'd suggest trying some "teen" or "slimfit" tampons. These are narrower and may be more comfortable, especially if you are nervous and tense about it.
