Troubleshooting is essential to fixing cars so read up on the cumbustion engine and how it works. If you want to really learn cars get an cheap older car with high milage and drive it till something goes wrong then buy a haynes or chilton and fix it or get a project car from the junkyard and go to town with a chilton handy. Hands on is the only way to go. Don't be afraid to get dirty and never give up. Start with the cheapest part first and work your way up. Either way American Cars break down 10 times more than any other car.

It's not really likely that you'll learn everything about cars, my suggestion, after working on cars for over 20 years now, learn the basics and the rest will come to you as you need it, buy a manual here and there, make sure you don't do more harm than good, and take your time, it'll take time but it's also the least expensive and can be done at your pace, also call some friends, share opinions, that is also helpful.
Good luck, and happy wrenching.

You can't truely learn without doing. Even auto schools are hands-on not just class room instruction. Plus a lot of the kids in those schools have been working on stuff since they were little. Buy a car that you can work on. Don't let you dad's lack of mechanical skills discourage you. If you really like the car stuff you'll have a great hobby or maybe a path to a career.

start with reading books at the library.stuff like auto repair for dummies.do simple thinks to get you hands dirty like valve cover gasket replacement.get an old beater that you can work on.sweep floors at a local garage, the guys there will usually show you how things are done.if you still think this is something you want to do,then go to a tech school and get a degree.thats the way of the future.good luck.

There are schools and books, but the only way to really learn is to work on them.
The community college usually has auto classes.
