Breast is best. Breast milk builds up the babies immunities and helps fight disease. If she doesn't want to breast feed, have her use a breast pump and then feed the baby breast milk from a bottle.

Neither and both. Breastfeeding is wonderful for mother's who are COMFORTABLE with it. If a mother is UNCOMFORTABLE with it the child will pick up on that discomfort and for the most part have problems. There is NOTHING wrong with bottle feeding an infant are you aware that one can pump and use breastmilk in a BOTTLE? And don't give me the "bonding" bullshit. My sister breastfed both of her daughters and THEY bonded with their father not their mother, I didn't breastfeed my daughter and we've been joined at the hip since she was born. Bonding isn't about FEEDING it is about the closeness the comfot the child gets. If mom is more comfortable feeding baby with a bottle then for her sake as well as the baby's she should do so.

Who is right depends on who you ask... However, if you are for breat feeding, the best thing that you can do is gather as much info as possible from books, magazines, etc on the benefits of breast feeding. That way you are not just giving your opinion, but are giving the facts. She may be thankful that you approached it in this way and will *hopefully* see your side. She can also look into La Leche League which is an organization for breastfeeding mothers.

breast feeding for newborns is actually really important. It helps the baby gain a good immune system, and there is certain vitamins in breast milk that a baby needs that bottled milk doesn't have.
It helps them grow so that they can be strong and healthy.
You should breast feed a baby as long as possible, preferably about a year or a little less.

You are right, hands down, no contest. Of course if she doesn't breastfeed, then she either doesn't understand how much better it is or if she obviously has a problem. If a baby must be formula fed, they usually do all right, but it is not something anybody should choose unless breastfeeding is not an option.

However, in spite of the fact that you are right if she's not willing to give her baby the best there is nothing you can do about it.

Science has proven over, and over, and over again that formula does not even come close to breastmilk in many areas.

Breastmilk is a living substance. It is made from blood cells in the mother's body. These enter the baby's body still alive. Formula is a dead substance which in its living form was intended to feed calves. It has been pasturized and processed into oblivion and many things have been added to it to make it more similar to breastmilk. Problem is, scientists haven't even identified many of the substances in breastmilk so formula manufacturers aren't even close to reproducing it.

Breastmilk also helps baby's immunity against diseases. More of it is processed. Their digestive tracts are healthier than their formula fed counterparts. But the added protection is not a "get out of jail free" card, nor is having formula a sentance to a life of illness and disease.

Formula just doesn't even come close to breastmilk. Here is a list of resources on articles on why breastmilk is better than formula: http://www.kellymom.com/bf/start/prepare/bf-benefits.html

And here is a list of 101 reasons to breastfeed: http://www.promom.org/101/

In the end though, nobody can force a mom to breastfeed. While it is her choice, you can make sure she has the facts about breastfeeding before she dismisses the idea completely because she thinks formula is better.

Breast is best, it's scientifically proven.
But it's her decision. Formula lacks several enzymes that can only be found in breastmilk. However, just about everyone born between 1950 and 1980 was mostly formula fed. Obviously it's not as bad a the Boob nazi's like to make it out to be.

Ultimately it is her choice. But breastfeeding is always best for baby. People seem to think that formula is developed to be basically the same as breast milk, but that's baloney. Statistically, babies who are breastfed have lower risks of death from SIDS, have better immune systems, and some say they even are more intelligent (though I think that one is highly debatable). Also, breastfeeding helps to create a bond between mother and child, and nothing takes the postpregnancy weight off as quickly as breastfeeding! The body uses all that extra fat stored throughout the pregnancy to create milk, and the weight comes off fast.

Breastfeeding is ALWAYS best, BUT formulas that contain DHA and ARA with iron supplements can let mothers who dont want to breast feed or cant, sigh with relief.
and honestly, what is RIGHT is what she feels most comfortable with. when her child grows up, no one is going to be able to pick him/her out of a crowd and say "that one right there was not breastfed!" i was the only formula fed child in my family. my other two siblings were breastfed.. we are ALL normal, and i scored higher on my sat's than they did. haha. i know that doesnt prove that formula is better, but your friend can rest easy knowing she can still have a perfectly happy and most importantly HEALTHY baby if she chooses to formula feed. let her decide on her own and have her do what she is comfortable with.

i breastfed and supplemented with formula for several weeks, then strictly formula fed.
