The faux suede winter coat I just bought is much too large for my torso through the body of the coat, but there is no smaller size available. It needs to be "sinched in" about four inches on both sides to fit properly. Any simple ideas on how I might achieve this without having to consult a tailor?

You mean cinched. It depends whether you can sew. Get a book called "Altering Womens' Ready-to-Wear" and it will show you how to make side darts. You'll have to do the lining too.

Cut to shape and glue back together, worked on my leather coat.
