Well, I'm thinking for a young kid like that the nano would be good. But even better would be the iPod shuffle. They even have a new iPod Shuffle. It is around $75 and can hold about 250 songs. This is a very good deal and it would be worth it for a kid around that age.

Also, there are many other mp3 players that would be suitable for that age. Just try typing in mp3 player on google.

for a 9-11 yr old boy, dont get a nano, they are too expensive and really small and its unnecessary because a 9-11 yr old doesnt need 4000 songs on his ipod. dont get the video because those also r too expensive. get a mini, let the boy pick out his color and cool case and he'll love it. or just a regular with a cool case in black. they are coming out with so many new things that its hard to keep track if they even still sell minis but try

Do they really want to buy "ipods" for kids that young? I am not opposed to mp3 players at that age but they should look for a product that is more sturdy and can handle a few drops. Plus, they may not want to have to deal with itunes.

I have a video ipod that i bought refurb from apple for 170 dollars. But they scratch easily. Try another brand and a smaller model to see if they are responsible enough to hang on to them 1st.

Try something from sandisk, iRiver, or similar brand. You can get a good size drive for less than 100.

I say buy a nano or an old-school one. a video is too expensive, and if they had another, they wouldn't care if it got beat up.

ipods are easy to get damaged- if your ganna get an ipod for someone, make sure they buy a protection thing-it helps alot.

an ipod video might be ok, only its not much different from nano, only thinner, but bigger, and you can watch videos on it (bigger screen)... and u get to carve something on the back!!! (like, they carve it for you.. for example, mine says my name on it)

and um... if they are that young, couldn't you get another mp3??? like i said, its really easy to get scratched, and damaged. and they aren't that cheap.
