I just got my first speeding ticket 82 in a 55mph zone. I was going "with the flow" and wasn't passing people left and right. I was sick that morning and was on my way to the doctor, on which he gave me a slip for two days off. I've heard others stories and generally I'm a very safe driving but I'm terrified on the thought of having to go to court, what is the best way to handle this? I'm totally lost...some have told me to plead for a lesser sentence, some have said get a lawyer...any suggestions?

My friend got a reckless driving ticket and said you only have to go to court if you want to contest the ticket. You can chance that the cop won't show up but if he/she does then you'll still have to pay the ticket plus you'll have to pay the court fees. Despite going with the flow of traffic, the cop still had the right to give you a ticket. Just pay the ticket and go to traffic school and you'll be fine.

When I was 18, I put a parked car into drive without starting the engine. I was trying to move my car down a small hill without making any noise at 4am. What I didn't know was that in an automatic car, everything locks up when you do this and the brake pedal froze. I totally forgot about the emergency brake. I freaked out, jumped out of the rolling car and watched it roll into a ditch. The car probably never rolled faster than 15 mph. Someone in a nearby house called the police.

There was no damage to the car and after it was towed out of the ditch, I was getting ready to drive home. A cop handed me a ticket and I tossed it in the back seat. Over a week later, I was cleaning out my car and I found the ticket. It was actually a court summons for reckless driving and it was in 2 days. I had a spotless driving record before this.

My mom called up the Public Defenders office and they said that it was too late to get one and they were all booked up. They suggested we hire a lawyer because reckless driving is serious and there could be jail time. We didn't know what to do, so my mom wound up hiring the cheapest lawyer she could find on short notice and it was $500/hr. I had gotten the summons in a very rich county and we were forced to pick a lawyer that lived in that county. The lawyer said there was a fine and possible jail time of 30 days to 6 months (something like that). We all went to court that day, my mom and I waited in the hall while the lawyer went in and did all the talking. He came out a few minutes later and said it was $100 fine and 5 points against my license.

It was all fine in the end but we spent a lot on the lawyer. I don't have any idea if it was worth it. Maybe I would have had to spend 30 days in jail without him (doubt it). It will be fine, you just need someone to help you and that would most likely be the public defender if you don't have extra money for your own lawyer.

Was the ticket for reckless driving or just speeding? If so, see if the court will allow you to go to defensive driving. That usually works for first time offenders. Call the number listed on the ticket and ask if you are eligible for defensive driving. Good luck!

Pay the fine before court date and you will not have to go.

You have the right to plead not guilty but if you do and are found guilty the costs go up and you have to pay a lawyer.

I would go to court and plead not guilty. If the cop doesn't show up, you don't get the ticket.
