The coldest I have experienced was -30 for over 30 days streight. The river where I lived froze 6 feet thick.

Standing on the corner waiting for the school bus in Chicago, before dawn, in a sharp wind, with the temp. about 13 degrees F., in the days when girls were forbidden to wear pants to school...under any circumstances.

I remember my mother insisting that nylon stockings (yep, this was before panty hose) helped to keep you warm.

I deduced from this:

1) Chicago is DAMN cold.

2) My mother could be completely wrong.

3) Girls should be allowed to wear proper clothing in bad weather.

Only #3 has ever been properly addressed.
