I'm not quite sure whether you're talking about a childrens book or the historic character 'Bloody Mary', after whom the cocktail is named (Vodka, tomato juice and celery salt around the rim of the glass - a great hangover cure).
If the latter, she was Queen Mary Tudor of Great Britain, who reigned between Edward VI and Elizabeth I, in the 16th century. Her father Henry VIII had dissolved the monasteries and split from the Roman Catholic church, establishing the Anglican (CofE) faith in Britain. This faith was further established under the young, sickly child King Edwards short reign, and became the principle faith under Elizabeths reign.
However, Mary was a Catholic, and during her reign she attempted to re-establish Catholicism in Britain, killing many of the new Anglican faiths leaders and supporters. Whilst her reign was probably no more 'bloody' than Henry or Elizabeths reigns, history is always written by the victors, and as Anglicanism remains the state faith of the UK, Marys actions earned her the epithet 'bloody'.
For more detailled info, simply google 'Mary I'.

mostly it is just an old folklore superstition. it might be slightly linked to queen mary I. she had quite a few miscarriges and false pregnancies. it was believed that she caused these herself.
