If your computer used Windows XP, then defragging will make very little difference.
1. You need to run a good virus check. http://www.ewido.net/en/download/ This is a good program you can use for free for 30 days. After you install it, follow the direction do update the definitions, then scan your computer. It will offer to do an automatic fix (which is what I do).
2. Reboot (restart your computer) after the virus scan.
3. Get a copy of Norton System Works (any version after 2003 or so will work). You can run Norton WinDoctor from the CD without installing anything, and it will find and fix a lot of other issues.
4. Reboot after Norton does its thing.
5. Consider uninstalling any programs you don't use.
6. Consider adding more memory to your computer. 512MB is a good minimum. 1024 MB is recommended by many people.
7. If you are pretty good with computers, JV16 Powertools can help clean-up/fix things in your registry. Plus, it can defrag the registry.
In my experience, doing 1-5 makes a big difference. If you have 384MB or less of Ram, adding Ram will help too. And, I have had good results from 7, but it is not for the Noob.
Good Luck.

All that stuff you installed and deleted, trial ware, shareware, or just stuff that didn't work, you did not remove them, you deleted them, and they weren't actually deleted, they virtually hid. there is a difference and that diff can affect a computers performance.
After a year of normal to heavy use on any WinXP box the MFT, Master File Table gets scrambled up.
The MFT is where all your programs, hooks, shells and whatever else a program or even a .doc reside at.
Don't go poking around in the MFT or Swap Section just willy nilly, it can get nasty. Or it can get normal.
Another common Win slow is the Restore Points, how many are on your Hard Drive. If there are more than 3 that's 2 too many. The bast way to back up any OS is with a Data Drive that is separate or on another partition as any System Files are on, but even that is not suggested, the best backup is on an external HDD or one that can be stored and accessed in case a repair is needed.
The point I am making is Back it up. Back it up to a Data Storage Device that is not on the system.
Cost is about $50-$70 for a new HDD, but the data saved using Incremental Backups far outweighs a bench fee.

Your ISP has a lot to do with your speed. If you have dial-up, forget about speed. DSL and cable are affected by the usage, so at certain times of the day can be slower than others. Dump programs you are not using. These can also slow down your computer's speed.

Remove any programs you don't use regularly. Defrag regularly, clear out your browser cache regularly, clear your modem/router daily (unplug, count to 10, plug back in).

positioned money right into a registry air purifier like RegCure, or attempt the loose CCleaner. aside out of your antivirus, run a antispyware/malware software to scrub, Malwarebytes is a competent loose one.
