When I consider something an argument, it's because there is no listening going on...just talking or yelling AT each other. Civil exhanges would be a debate or discussion, where there is talking and listening...and open-mindedness.

In a philosophical sense it's the exchange of the opinions of two or more parties regarding a certain issue, it can be conclusive or inconclusive. They basically discuss a topic together and try and come up with an answer for a question that they're disagreeing over.

Or is a tracing of thought? What side of the equation does the argument belong? Argument has many meanings all of which are applicable in the right circumstance.

It always depends on whatever you are arguing about. Is it something of importance, ex. whether you think abortion should be legalized or not, or is it just a simple matter of disagreement, ex. what you think tastes better, vanilla ice cream or chocolate.
The former I would consider a debate, and the latter would be more of an arguement.
