To everyone that has posted a response to my question so far. Thank you. each one you have given a thoughtful answer.
Keeping it under 600cc is the main point that everyone is making as well as taking a safety course.
Thanks again everyone

I have a Kawasaki ninja 250cc. This is the best sports bike for beginner. It is light and surprisingly has some power!
I have 2004 model and I paid $2200 about a year ago.
I got it from the craigslist.
For place in New Jersey that provides lessons for beginners interested in learning to ride a motorcycle check the websites bellow.
Good luck!

Couple of good tips in those answers.Take a course, seriously probably the best piece of advice ever!Dont make the mistake of having to have the fastest bike around,a skilled rider is what makes the bike quick,if you dont have the skills you just create a poorly guided missile looking for a place to explode. As to what motorcycle I dont know what laws apply in your part of the world but any of the 500cc or thereabouts size twins would be just about ideal the sv650 probably the sportiest to look at but the gs500 is nice and er5 or 6 is nice too.Put a bikini fairing on if you dont like the naked look dresses it up nicely.BUT if you want the sporty fairing be aware YOU will fall OFF.Hopefully only in the carpark when you slip on some oil patch or over balance when your still new to the game and the more plastic on the bike the more damage you will do.Dont be put off, riding a bike is a lot of fun, even more when you ride it well.Seriously the lessons are probably the most important for a beginner to motorcycling.
Just remember the most important safety feature on or in any vehicle is your BRAIN.
Stay Upright.Hope this helps.

Well, before you look at my answer, check my pic, and possibly my blog. I'm gonna tell you things you don't want to hear. One. You are a nut job if you get a sport bike right off the bat. You learn on what was called, in my day, a street bike. A picture of my ancient Yamaha XS 650 "Special" in on my blog. Sorry, no pic of my first two bikes. But, I do not speak through my hat! You get to the 650 stage after a bit of practice on the small stuff. Even if it's a moped or scooter. You will learn valuable tips on balance and turning. I had the 650 just six months and got "radical" on it. I also have a steel plate in my leg from my "radical" doings. I gave up the bike for a while, but am now riding an H-D FXDWG. It took me twenty plus years to get here. I can go on and on, but if you are interested in a serious response, hit me on my blog. I will say one other thing. I thought it took a big set to ride in Florida. If you are going to learn in 'Jersey, get lots of insurance. Your parents will love you for it. (Don't go bigger than 450 to start! A 450 was my first first real bike (It was a Honda.) after lots of moped and scooter time.) Good luck and Ciao!

For your first bike, don't get anything over 600cc. Larger size bikes will be to heavy to learn with.
If motorcycles are a little intimidating and you don't even know how to drive a car with standard transmission (clutch & manually shift gears) then I wouldn't recomend anything over a 250. After you learn how to ride, you can still enjoy a 250. If you know how to use a clutch, a 500cc bike would be a better choice.
Honda - nsf100 - cbr600
Kawasaki - ex250 - ex500 - zx600
Suzuki - gs500 - sv650
Yamaha - yzf600
The address' are to long to type. Just search for - "manufacture".com (ex - Honda.com)
Here's a couple of videos just to get you started.
http://youtube.com/index
Search for "how to ride a motorcycle for the first time" (watch part 2 second)
Look in the motorcycle section of your yellow pages for motorcycle training/learn to ride. I'm sure you'll find something. Learn how to ride first, before buying your own bike. You'll feel more confident in getting a 600cc bike.
Have fun!

just go to a motorcycle safety course, they will have bikes there to learn on, while your there look at the bikes there, a used standard nighthawk 250 will be sufficient to drop a few times till you get the hang of it. Dont go spend 5 figures on a brand new 600 or bigger and get yourself killed and financially messed up too. look at the kawasaki ninja, just dont go any larger than a 500, the suzuki GS500 is alright. The fact yo want to start with a sport/racer is a little bothersome. Dont be trying to do burnouts and wheelies first.

For once, it seems that most so far have given good advice in this type of thread, so I won't get long winded repeating what they've said. Keep it UNDER 600cc. There are finally a few choices in the 250-500cc range available in the U.S. now. Take the MSF or equivalent rider's safety course before you buy anything. Good luck!
