if you have a good battery and clean cables, it could be the starter or if there's water in the cylinders from a blown head gasket, it could have a hydraulic lock, meaning the piston wont move, try to turn it over by hand or pull the plugs and then crank it, might give it a compression check at the same time :(

The clicking you hear is the starter solonoid making contact. So the battery has enough juice to fire the capacitor on the starter. But I'm guessing the battery is too low to provide real cranking amps. Or possibly there's a corroded connection. Try cleaning the battery posts and cable clamps. Mix up a paste of baking soda and spread it around over the corrosion. Your battery should be replaced every two to three years, unless you have an Optima. You didn't mentioned the make and mileage of vehicle, but starter motors rarely fail at under 150,000 miles. Unless you have a Ford or Chevy or something made in France. Crap can fall off them at any time.

Car Starter Problems Clicking

If the lights don't dim when you turn the key, it's not the battery or the connections. You need to measure the big wire from the solenoid to the starter to see if you're getting 12 volts there when someone turns the key. Anybody who knows how to use a voltmeter can pinpoint the problem in two minutes.

How did you test the battery? Did you take it out and have it LOAD tested? If not then that's the place I would start looking, clean the terminals, get a boost, if the car starts, replace the battery.

Are you sure the battery is fine, boost it anyway. Check all connections to the battery and the ground to the engine block. If all else fails replace the starter.

Solenoid on the starter motor could be sticking. Also check the earth cable on the battery or the earth from the engine to the chassis.

if its a standard you can pop start the starter if not you need a new starter. if you replace it your self its on the drivers side next to the engine. you will need a 11-14 mm wrench. plus dont forget to dissconect the battery cable or you'll get a pretty nasty shock.

Check out your battery connections,to make sure they're tight. If this doesn't work ,remove the starter and have it tested for free at pep boys, auto zone etc.
