Nipple shield and lanolin. Also letting them air dry as much as possible helps. You really shouldn't get sore nipples. Make sure the baby is latching on correctly.
Good luck!!

Baby oragel on your nipple temporarily numbs the pain and is safe for the baby. If you see any sort of pressure line on your nipple after the baby has finished nursing or if the baby is opening her mouth or breaking the seal around the nipple, he/she may have a latching problem. I remember my breasts being tender around the nipple but not "on fire" sore. If in doubt, ask a professional--better you find out there is not a problem than go with an easily-solved issue without help.

First of all congratulations on your new bundle of joy... I just had a baby also Oct 8th and I started off breastfeeding... Your nipples will be sore, cracked and dry. What I used for my nipples was "Lansinoh brand Lanolin for breastfeeding mothers". It's safe to use before and after breastfeeding and is harmless to the baby. Check this product out and hopefully it'll work for you, like it worked for me... smiles... Good Luck!

You should use a special nipple shield for when you are breastfeeding, it helps the baby latch on better, and help take off some of the pain from your nipples. Hope it hurts. Good luck!!!!

Go to the pharmacy and ask the pharmacist what they suggest, there are special creams that help, some work better than others, that would be your best bet. These creams, not only help toughen the nipples for breastfeeding, but also prevent cracking from drying out.

I think all the moms here have about covered it. In the future (providing you want another baby), it's a good idea to "toughen" your nipples, before the baby is born. Start off with a gentle massage, by rotating the nipple/areola between you fingers... and as the days progress, get a little firmer in your pressure. Doing this in the month or two before delivery, will make a huge difference. Congrats on your little one ... enjoy EVERY moment. They grow up far too fast. *sob*

do not do cabbage leaves! They will dry up yuour milk supply. Try lanolin or apply some of your breast milk to your nipples and let it air dry. Dont use a nipple shield as it can confuse the baby.
try seeing a lactation consultant since it might be that the baby isnt latching on properly the babies mouth should cover all or almost all of the areola (the drk part of your nipple) also make sure the baby opens as wide as he or she canb4 inserting your breast into their mouth

Use Lansinoh (or equivalent) cream. Also you can buy some gel pads from the pharmacy that you keep in the fridge and then place over your nipples.
Don't worry, I had the same thing when breastfeeding my son, the pain doesn't last for very long!

medela makes special compresses that can be used warm or chilled in the fridge. also they have hydrogel dressings that, although expensive, are really very nice.
You can call medela at 1-800-tell you, or i'm sure they have a website. Most Targets sell both of these products.
Just make sure your nipples are just sort because of the breast feeding, not because of blisters or yeast infection. Can be due to improper latch, or can just be because you're body is getting used to breast feeding.
