Algae needs two things in order to grow, phosphates and light. Make sure you arent feeding your fish too much, dont let any of the food stay/ get to the bottom of the tank. You should do 20% water changes ever week to keep down the ammonia and phosphates. Feed your fish a food low in phosphates like nutrafin pellets or flakes. let your tank get about 8-9 hrs of light this will help keep down the algae. If you are unable to do that invest in about 4 nice sized snails they will help.

The natural light has nothing to do with why you have brown algae. How long has the tank been set up? Brown algae is common in newer tanks and will usually go away on its own. If it has been set up for a while then it could be from high nitrates or high phosphates. Green algae is caused by too much light unlike brown algae (which are actually diatoms) can be caused by not enough light but with all the natural light that probably isn't it especially if you also have a tank light. Here is a website that goes more into detail about brown algae and how to get rid of it. http://www.thetropicaltank.co.uk/algae.htm

You can also try an algae eater, just make sure they are compatible with goldies and that they will eat the brown algae and not just the green stuff. Here is a site that shows some good choices but I don't know if all of them eat the brown algae or not. http://www.kokosgoldfish.com/comfish.html And don't ever get a common pleco, I have heard way too many stories where they have killed the goldfish because they like their slime coat.

it could be brown algae, but its hard to tell without a picture. algae comes from an imbalance of lighting and fishy watses. yes, siamese algae eaters do love it, but you shoudlnt rely on a fish to clean your tank for you. the trouble with getting a true SAE is that they are rare and there are other fish that resemble them, some people try to sell the fakes as the true SAEs. there's false SAEs, flying foxes, and otos. you could just scrape it out.

Since algae is a plant ,lots of natural light is going to make it grow,i would suggest moving it from the natural light ,especially if it is near a window, worse place to put a tank, you can buy a cheap algae scraper,to take care of some of it,and then siphon out about 20 % of your water to clean some of the algae out.also buy an algae eater,a pleco is good.Live plants are great too, however the goldfish would eat the plants.
